My Scotland Camino
My fourth UK Camino took me along the coast of Scotland, from Aberdeen to Arbroath, following a fascinating mixture of ancient pilgrim paths. I chose to participate in this camino because of its characteristically Scottish scenery, its history, and, admittedly, for the welcome respite it offered from the intense summer heat of Malta.
From the very beginning, the journey had a quietness that felt deeply restorative. There were long stretches where the only sounds were the cries of seagulls and other birds, the movement of the sea, and our footsteps on the path. The scenery was beautiful and ever-changing, with rugged coastline, open landscapes and peaceful places that invited reflection. Away from the noise and rush of everyday life, I found a sense of calm and inner peace.
As always, the Camino was not only about the landscape, but also about the people. Friendships grew naturally through the shared experience of walking, talking, laughing, encouraging one another and reaching the end of each day together. These connections are among the most precious gifts of any pilgrimage.
For me, there was also the special pleasure of exploring old churchyards, abbey ruins and ancient tombstones. I have always been drawn to such places, with their silence, mystery and layers of history. Standing among weathered stones and ruins, I felt connected to the many people who had lived, worshipped and travelled through these places centuries before us. Arbroath Abbey was a particularly fitting and memorable place in which to bring the journey to an end.
This Camino was made all the more enjoyable by the excellent organisation of Xircamini. My sincere appreciation goes to James, Tucc and all the other helpers, who organised the journey so carefully and looked after us with patience and kindness. Their support allowed us to experience the Camino with confidence and peace of mind, knowing that we were in caring and capable hands.
The Scotland Camino gave me exactly what I had hoped for: beautiful scenery, friendship, history, tranquillity and time to reconnect with myself. It was a journey of quiet moments and meaningful experiences, and another Camino that I will remember with great affection.
