P67 – Ghajn Mixquqa | Lippija Loop
July 29, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm CEST
FreeThe Ghajn Tuffieha Tower (known also as Ghajn Mixquqa) is one of the Lascaris Towers built in 1637 with the Lippija and Nadur Towers in line of sight. They formed part of the Northwest coastal fortifications of Malta during the time of the knights.
The tower is built on a former (medieval) look-out post and would have been manned by a captain and three militia who were paid by the Universita’ (the local ruling council of Malta at the time).
The Gnejna Tower, known as tal-Lippija (originally called Torre del Migiarro) was also built in the same year on the ridge overlooking Gnejna Bay, known as Wardija Ridge. It is of a similar stature as the Mixkuka Tower and was designed by the same architect. However it had with it a chapel dedicated to St. Agatha.
We will meet at Zebbiegh for a 7:30 p.m. (sharp) start. We commence with the descent to Ghajn Tuffieha and leave the road above Ghajn Tuffieha Bay on the clay / soil terrain heading towards Qarraba. At Qarraba we ascend to Lippija Tower and from there continue towards Bingemma Road looping back to Zebbiegh.
It’s a 10km to 12km walk some of which is on uneven terrain.
While this is not a power walk we endeavour to maintain a brisk pace. Please carry water, a light and suitable walking / trekking shoes with a good grip. Please also wear a smile. It suits you.
