P65 – Selmun – Mistra Loop
July 15, 2020 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm CEST
FreeDuring our previous Wed Walk someone asked whether ‘Selmun’ was also one of the Wigncourt towers. Although it was built during the reign of Grand Master Alof Wignacourt (1607), Selmun is technically not a tower or fort but a castle. The Monte della Redenzione (a charity established following the death of Katerina Vitale to raise the money to redeem Christians enslaved by pirates) built the Selmun estate (extending to Mistra) for knights to relax and hunt rabbits. The rent money was channelled to the redemption fund.
We’ll meet next to Selmun Castle (Google Maps: X95J+MH Mellieha, Malta).
From the Selmun, we will descend to Mistra bay. From there we walk past the Mistra Battery (Despirasse Battery) built during the reign of Grandmaster Pinto and walk along the raised coast, past St. paul’s Islands to Mgiebah / Selmun / Ghajn Hadid bays and from there we loop around Fort Campbell (pre-WWII British fort) and Selmun Castle.
We kindly request all those intending to join us to follow the 6 health rules we listed in https://xircammini.org/covid-19/covid-19-keep-calm-carry-on-8/ under “Local Trekking | Health Directives”.
Today’s walk is less than 10km but has a number of ascents and uneven terrain. It is strongly advisable that you have suitable walking shoes and some water, Carry a light. Please also wear a smile. It suits you. This is not a power walk but we do try to maintain a brisk pace.
John Darmanin will lead this walk. Tucc and I will also walk with you.
The walk starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp (please be there before).
