The Camino Ungaro, or the Hungarian St. James’s Way, offers a captivating pilgrimage experience from Budapest to Bratislava. This route forms a significant part of the larger European Camino de Santiago network, ultimately leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. While the full journey to Santiago de Compostela exceeds 3,200km, this journey between Budapest and Bratislava is approximately 250 kilometres. It is rich in history and natural beauty, allowing pilgrims to traverse picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and historically significant sites.
The starting point for the Hungarian Way of St. James is Budapest, from the Zero Kilometre Waymark and continues on a roughly 200-kilometre trek to the ancient Romanesque church of St. James in Lébény, a crucial historical stopping point for pilgrims. From Lébény, our route continues into Slovakia, stopping in Bratislava.
Key stops and points of interest along the route from Budapest to Bratislava include the magnificent Basilica of Esztergom, the Mária Valéria Bridge connecting Esztergom with Štúrovo in Slovakia, the twin-city of Komárno straddling the Hungarian-Slovakian border, Győr and Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
