Caminho de Fátima: A Pilgrimage Along the Tagus
Please follow this link to register for the event.
Embark on a profound spiritual journey along the Caminho de Fátima, a revered Marian pilgrimage route in Portugal that draws millions annually. This particular path, known as the Caminho do Tejo, traces the majestic Tagus River (Rio Tejo) from the historic Cathedral Sé in Lisbon to the sacred Cova da Iria in Fátima. Pilgrims will experience the diverse Portuguese landscape, traversing challenging uphill climbs and serene descents into the valleys of the Aire and Candeiros Mountains, with the intermittent companionship of the Rio Tejo.
The Rio Tejo, a vital artery of the Iberian Peninsula, originates at Fuente García, at an elevation of less than 1,600 meters above sea level, and finally flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The Tejo River plains are renowned for their exceptional red wines, with the Tejo region holding the distinction of being Portugal’s oldest wine-producing region. This Caminho de Fátima offers more than just a spiritual quest; it provides an opportunity to explore the vibrant city of Lisbon on the afternoon of arrival and to savour the rich flavours of typical Portuguese cuisine and renowned wines throughout the journey.
The Cova da Iria, a tranquil basin nestled in the central region of Portugal, specifically in the Santarém district, holds profound significance as the site of the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima. It was here, between May and October of 1917, that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three young shepherd children: Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto. During these apparitions, Mary identified herself as the “Lady of the Rosary” and imparted messages to the children. These messages included what became known as the “three secrets of Fátima.” The last secret is especially relevant today and talks about the consecration of Russia to her as a means to achieve world peace and prevent further global calamity.
