Sharing Europe’s Cultural and Historical Heritage through Trekking

XirCammini Founding Committee and current Board, Formative Period 2018-20

The committee of the six founding members consists of avid trekkers and Camino aficionados who between them have trekked extensively not only in Spain but across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia.

Through XirCammini they want to share with others their passion for trekking focusing on the ancient pilgrimage routes of Europe.

Marie Louise Muscat Azzopardi

Among her most notable, solo, treks are the Camino Frances; Via Podiensis from Le Puy in France to Roncesvalles in Spain; Camino Primitivo; Arles route from Toulouse to Lourdes (then following the Piemontese Route to link up with the Aragonese route); Camino del Norte from San Sebastian to Oviedo; Via Podiensis again from Le Puy to Cahors; European Peace Walk; GR20 in Corsica; Tour du Mont Blanc; Julian Alps in Slovenia (High Route) and Bavarian trek in Switzerland. Additionally she has walked several other week-long treks with the Ramblers Association in Italy, France and Sweden.

Her longest trek was the Camino Frances and, according to Marie Louise her hardest was the GR20 in Corsica.

Rituccia Portelli

Her most notable treks include the Camino Primitivo; Camino Ingles and parts of the Camino Frances; Celtic trails in Ireland; Sri Lanka; Kerala; Hatta Mountains, Oman; Borneo, Malaysia; Annapurna Full Circuit / Thorungla Pass, Nepal. Additionally, Rituccia has also trekked extensively in Sicily, the Aeolian Islands and volcanoes and Salento / Puglia and Pollino regions of Italy.

Her longest trek was the Camino Primitivo and her hardest the Annapurna Circuit / Thorungla Pass, Nepal.

John Darmanin

John walked the Camino Portugues, the Camino Ingles and parts of the Camino Frances; Hadrian Wall in the United Kingdom. He has also trekked in Isreal, Ukraine, India, Tatras Mountains and Italy / Sicily.

His longest trek was the Camino Portugues from Lisbon.

Joseph Farrugia

His walks include the Camino Frances; the Camino Primitivo, Camino Ingles and Camino Finisterre as well as part of the Camino Portugues. Other walks include Pista Alto Montana and Etna Summit.Joseph’s longest trek was the Camino Frances and his hardest the Pista Alto Montana and Etna Summit

Mark Mifsud

Mark has walked the Camino Frances, Annapurna Circuit / Thorungla Pass (Nepal), parts of the Camino Frances, Wadi Rum (Jordan), Nebrodi and Isole Eolie (Sicily) and the Transumanza trek in Abbruzzo, Italy.

Mark’s longest trek was 300km on the Camino Frances (On the Way of St. James in Spain) and his the Annapurna Circuit including the Thorungla Pass, Nepal.

James Portelli

His treks include the Camino Primitivo; Camino Ingles and parts of the Camino Frances; Celtic trails in Ireland; North Wales, Sri Lanka; Kerala; Hatta Mountains, Oman; Borneo, Malaysia; Annapurna Full Circuit / Thorungla Pass, Nepal. Additionally, James has also trekked extensively in Sicily, the Aeolian Islands and volcanoes, Salento and Pollino regions of Italy and on central European portions of the Camino De Santiago in Hamburg, Salzburg and Slovakia.

His longest trek was the Camino Primitivo and his hardest the Annapurna Circuit / Thorungla Pass, Nepal.

The current Board of Administrators consists of:

  5. John Darmanin, Director | Founding Member responsible for training and trek development
  6. John Chircop, Director responsible for social media, IT and assisting in training and trek development
  7. Charmaine Mifsud, Director responsible assisting in training and trek development.

Services are undertaken pro-bono.
