SUMMARY:Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia[FULLY BOOKED]
DESCRIPTION:Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia | THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia is the 2nd segment of the Camino Maltés de Santiago de Compostela and takes us from Caltagirone (Citta’ Jacopea to Sanctuary of St. James in Capizzi). On this cammino we will be assisted  by Toto Trumino\, from the Confraternity of St. James in Sicily and the originator of this heritage walk. \n \nWe fly to Sicily on 3rd February 2024 (FR367: 11:35 to 12:25) and transfer from the airport to Caltagirone. \nWe have a free afternoon to settle in our respective accommodations and for a short urban hike exploring highlights in this World Heritage city. \n \nCaltagirone is the Citta Jacopea and the start of the Cammino di San Giacomo in Sicilia. Etymologically\, the name Caltagirone is derived from Arabic qalʿat al-jirār (قلعة الجرار) meaning \,castle of pottery jars’ underlining how far back the pottery tradition goes in this town. Numerous archaeological finds date back to the 2nd millennium BC. In 1030 Arabs built a castle in Caltagirone to fend off attacks by the Byzantine general George Maniakes accompanied by Ligurian allies.  Traces of Ligurian language still exist in the local dialect. \nThe main attractions of the city are the 142-step monumental Staircase of Santa Maria del Monte\, built from 1608 in the old part of the town and the Church of St James the Elder. \n   \nOn the 4th February we will commence the Camino di San Giacomo from the church of St. James and our itinerary over the following days is as follows: \n4th February 2024: Caltagirone – San Michele Ganzaria – Mirabella Mbaccari. Distance: 19km with approximate altitude differences of + 260 m/ – 300 m. Level: Easy to Moderate. \n5th February 2024: Mirabella Mbaccari – Piazza Armerina. Distance: 21km with approximate altitude differences of + 500 m/ – 300 m. Level: Moderate. \n6th February 2024: Piazza Armerina – Valguarnera Caro Pepe. Distance: 19km with approximate altitude differences of + 300 m/ – 380 m. Level: Easy to Moderate. \n7th February 2024: Valguarnera – Assoro. Distance: 25km with approximate altitude differences of + 980 m/ – 680 m. Level: Moderate to Difficult (because of ascent). \n8th February 2024: Assoro – Nissoria – Nicosia. Distance: 25km with approximate altitude differences of + 630 m/ – 680 m. Level: Moderate. \n9th February 2024: Nicosia – Capizzi. Distance: 17km with approximate altitude differences of + 680 m/ – 330 m. Level: Easy to Moderate. \nIn Capizzi we are now in the Province of Messina and close to Cerami\, the site of the famous Norman Battle against the Arabs with the legend of St George as the Matamoros assisting the greatly outnumbered Normans to vistory. Both Ptolemy and Cicero mention Capitum\, Capizzi precursor and it appears that the town had considerable importance during Hellenistic and Roman times together with Haluntium (present-day San Marco d’ Alunzio). \nCapizzi is renown for the Sanctuary of St James the Elder and for the feast of the Saint every year in July. The statue of St. James the Elder is carried on the shoulders by the Capitini making stops in the various churches. During the procession the  “Wall of Miracles” is demolished. We’ll learn of thelLegends surrounding the “Wall of Miracles” during our Cammino. \n10th February 2024: We check out after breakfast and proceed to the airport stopping for lunch en-route. (Flying out on FR396: 17:05 arriving in Malta at17:55). \nThe contribution for this event is Euros 595 per person. \nThe contribution includes hotel / B&B accommodation mostly on bed and breakfast basis (last couple of nights on half-board)\, airport (coach) transfers\, daily coach and baggage transfers during our 7-day stay and a pilgrim kit with Credencial\, Cammino-Patch\, teeshirt and Testimonium and assistance car during our trekking. The cost does not include flights. \nTHIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED.

SUMMARY:Costiera Amalfitana & Matera Trekking
DESCRIPTION:XirCammini will be combining 2 trekking experiences in la costa amalfitana and matera combining scenic panoramas of spectacular beauty across land and sea and also stepping back in time (the 9th century home to the remains of St. Andrew). \nSome general points of interest regarding these treks: \n\nWe’ll stay in agritourismi / B&Bs in a town within walking distance from San Lazzaro and the spectacular Amalfi coast panorama;\nWe will trek the Sentiero degli Dei (God’s Pathway)\, known as such for its outstanding panoramic beauty. This is a 13km trek from Bomerano to Positano. Depending on weather conditions we can also enjoy a boat tour of the Costa Amalfitana.\nWe will also hike through Vallone delle Ferriere (the valley of foundries) also known as Vallone dei Mullini (Valley of Mills)\, a wooded valley of chestnut trees and ferns with remains of medieval foundries and water powered paper mills. This hike is approximately 12km and we will finish our trail in the city of Amalfi providing us with enough time to visit the medieval Duomo (Cathedral) di Amalfi.\nWe’ll walk through the lemon paths of Maiori e Minori and visit Ravello.\nDepending on weather and/or visibility we will also have time for one final walk  on the West coast before travelling to Matera. Weather / conditions permitting we’ll visit Vesuvius.\nWe’ll visit the  grotte Pertosa and  Matera and\nTrek the Murgia Sentiero.\n\nThe event is open only to XirCammini members and is being organised by Vai Col trekking (https://www.vaicoltrekkingsicilia.com/) covering local transport\, accommodation on half board basis and experienced trekking leader / guide. \nXirCammini is a membership-based NGO. SUMMARY:P67 - Ghajn Mixquqa | Lippija Loop
DESCRIPTION:The Ghajn Tuffieha Tower (known also as Ghajn Mixquqa) is one of the Lascaris Towers built in 1637 with the Lippija and Nadur Towers in line of sight. They formed part of the Northwest coastal fortifications of Malta during the time of the knights. \nThe tower is built on a former (medieval) look-out post and would have been manned by a captain and three militia who were paid by the Universita’ (the local ruling council of Malta at the time). \nThe Gnejna Tower\, known as tal-Lippija (originally called Torre del Migiarro) was also built in the same year on the ridge overlooking Gnejna Bay\, known as Wardija Ridge. It is of a similar stature as the Mixkuka Tower and was designed by the same architect. However it had with it a chapel dedicated to St. Agatha. \nWe will meet at Zebbiegh for a 7:30 p.m. (sharp) start. We commence with the descent to Ghajn Tuffieha and leave the road above Ghajn Tuffieha Bay on the clay / soil terrain heading towards Qarraba. At Qarraba we ascend to Lippija Tower and from there continue towards Bingemma Road looping back to Zebbiegh. \nIt’s a 10km to 12km walk some of which is on uneven terrain. \nWhile this is not a power walk we endeavour to maintain a brisk pace. Please carry water\, a light and suitable walking / trekking shoes with a good grip.  Please also wear a smile. It suits you.

SUMMARY:P65 – Selmun – Mistra Loop
DESCRIPTION:During our previous Wed Walk someone asked whether ‘Selmun’ was also one of the Wigncourt towers. Although it was built during the reign of Grand Master Alof Wignacourt (1607)\, Selmun is technically not a tower or fort but a castle. The Monte della Redenzione (a charity established following the death of Katerina Vitale to raise the money to redeem Christians enslaved by pirates) built the Selmun estate (extending to Mistra) for knights to relax and hunt rabbits. The rent money was channelled to the redemption fund. \nWe’ll meet next to Selmun Castle (Google Maps: X95J+MH Mellieha\, Malta). \nFrom the Selmun\, we will descend to Mistra bay. From there we walk past the Mistra Battery (Despirasse Battery) built during the reign of Grandmaster Pinto and walk along the raised coast\, past St. paul’s Islands to Mgiebah  / Selmun / Ghajn Hadid bays and from there we loop around Fort Campbell (pre-WWII British fort) and Selmun Castle. \nWe kindly request all those intending to join us to follow the 6 health rules we listed in https://xircammini.org/covid-19/covid-19-keep-calm-carry-on-8/ under “Local Trekking | Health Directives”. \nToday’s walk is less than 10km but has a number of ascents and uneven terrain. It is strongly advisable that you have suitable walking shoes and some water\, Carry a light. Please also wear a smile. It suits you.  This is not a power walk but we do try to maintain a brisk pace. \nJohn Darmanin will lead this walk. Tucc and I will also walk with you. \nThe walk starts at 7:30 p.m. sharp (please be there before).

SUMMARY:P64 – Wigncourt Mwejgel Towers Loop
DESCRIPTION:Most of the coastal towers in the south of Malta were built following the Turkish incursion of 1614.  St. Thomas Tower\, built by Wignacourt had within its line of sight the church of St. Gregory (which doubled up as a watch tower) and the De Redin Coastal Towers built a few decades later. \nWe’ll meet again next to St. Thomas (Alof Wignacourt) Tower  (Google Maps: VH6F+F3 Marsaskala\, Malta) . \nJohn Darmanin will lead this walk. Tucc and I will also walk with you. \nThe walk starts at 7:30 p.m. (please be there there before). We will first take us inland with an incline past Torri Mamo and St. Caetan Church to Sant Antnin Family Park and across to il-Bidni\, Limits of Zabbar. \nUntil 1615 Zabbar was part of the parish of Zejtun. Although a sanctuary to our Lady of Graces existed as a place of pilgrimage even then the vice-parish church of Zabbar was a church dedicated to St. James. Zabbar became a parish under Bishop Baldassare Cagliares in 1615 and our walk takes us on what used to be the boundary between the Zabbar and Zejtun parishes (most of which is now part of Marsascala). \nFrom the Bidni area we’ll start a gradual descent to the De Redin Tower known as Mwejgel or Giddida Tower\, and from the coast we loop back through Zonqor Point past the prominade to St. Thomas Tower\, Marsascala. \nWe kindly request all those intending to join us to follow the 6 health rules we listed in https://xircammini.org/covid-19/covid-19-keep-calm-carry-on-8/ under “Local Trekking | Health Directives”. \nIt is a 10km to 12km walk. It is strongly advisable that you have suitable walking shoes and some water and also a light. Please also wear a smile. It suits you.  This is not a power walk but we do try to maintain a brisk pace.
