The Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria is a unique pilgrimage route on the island of Gran Canaria, deeply rooted in historical events and religious devotion. Its origins trace back centuries to a legend involving Galician sailors caught in a tempest. Fearing shipwreck, they prayed to St. James the Elder (Santiago Apóstol), vowing to construct a church in his honour at the highest point of the main island if their lives were spared. This pledge led to the establishment of a church dedicated to St. James in Tirajana. In 1850, the statue of St. James was relocated to St. Bartolomé, Tunte, which became another significant point on the pilgrimage, gradually developing a Camino between these two shrines of St. James: Gáldar in the north and St. Bartolomé and Tirajana in the south, the Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria. We start our pilgrimage from the southern coastal town of Maspalomas. This Camino is less than 100km and spread over 4 walking days.
This pilgrimage route, while distinct from the traditional Camino de Santiago routes on the Iberian Peninsula, shares the same spiritual essence and dedication to St. James. It offers pilgrims a challenging yet rewarding journey across the diverse landscapes of Gran Canaria, from coastal areas to mountainous terrain, connecting historical and religious sites. The route is officially recognized and promoted by local authorities and pilgrimage associations, attracting both religious pilgrims and hikers interested in the island’s history and natural beauty. The Camino de Santiago de Gran Canaria serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of St. James and the deep-rooted faith that shaped the island’s cultural and religious landscape over centuries.
